Newson’s trial dreams in tatters
Newson’s trial dreams in tatters

Needham Market striker Sam Newson’s dream of having a trial with Gillingham is in tatters after he was stretchered off on Saturday.

The 23 year old was set to head to Medway on Sunday ahead of a four day trial with The Gills, but sustained a knee injury against Chatham Town in the Ryman League Division One North fixture.

Newson was hoping to impress Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler after scoring 29 times for Needham Market already this season, but it looks as though he’ll have to hope he gets another chance to come to Priestfield in the future.

The striker tweeted this on Saturday night about the situation: “Should of been on my way to gillingham fc tomo but injured my knee in today’s game. #worstfeeling #gutted”

“Thanks for all the support guys and girls! will know more in a day or two! but hopefully not long. hoping to get another go when fit!!”

Gillingham could well be in the market for a new striker with Frank Nouble’s loan spell set to end after next weekend’s game with Bristol Rovers, whilst Jo Kuffour is set to return to Rovers just before the New Year when his loan deal expires.

With Adam Birchall still on the sidelines, Hessenthaler looks to be keeping all his options open for the January transfer window.
